Emphasis & Alignment
Emphasis
"Dimensional elements,or rather, elements that appear to have dimension, attract attention because they echo reality in a way that visually flat images do not."Design Basics Index
by Jim Krause Pg. 73
The site http://helvetitee.com/tee is a good example of how to use layering and virtual embossing to create depth and emphasis in your design. The person covering the title Helvetitee adds a small sense of depth, but the boxes over the person shows how much more impact the boxes have in the image because of the beveling.
Alignment
"A design grid is a hidden system of guidelines, borders and columns into which elements are placed and into which they are aligned. It's a simple and surprisingly flexible system for providing a framework for the material being presented within a brochure, booklet, ad (singly or a part of a campaign) or throughout a web site."Design Basics Index
by Jim Krause Pg. 93
A grid system is very helpful when creating a layout for a website. A great way to do that is to create a grid system. This method is so helpful that there is even a site devoted to the grid system called 960.gs The site not only uses a grid system for its layout, it also shows the grid that was used to create a lot of other websites.
