Emphasis & Alignment
Emphasis
"Dimensional elements,or rather, elements that appear to have dimension, attract attention because they echo reality in a way that visually flat images do not."Design Basics Index
by Jim Krause Pg. 73
The site http://helvetitee.com/tee is a good example of how to use layering and virtual embossing to create depth and emphasis in your design. The person covering the title Helvetitee adds a small sense of depth, but the boxes over the person shows how much more impact the boxes have in the image because of the beveling.
Alignment
"A design grid is a hidden system of guidelines, borders and columns into which elements are placed and into which they are aligned. It's a simple and surprisingly flexible system for providing a framework for the material being presented within a brochure, booklet, ad (singly or a part of a campaign) or throughout a web site."Design Basics Index
by Jim Krause Pg. 93
A grid system is very helpful when creating a layout for a website. A great way to do that is to create a grid system. This method is so helpful that there is even a site devoted to the grid system called 960.gs The site not only uses a grid system for its layout, it also shows the grid that was used to create a lot of other websites.

Grouping and Harmony
Grouping
“Effective grouping streamlines the viewer’s search for
meaning and information.”
Design Basics Index by Jim Krause pg. 43
One of the most widely used sites on the internet is
yahoo.com. many people go here to get news, entertainment and check their email
all in one convenient place. If the sections weren’t grouped together and so
easy to find, people go somewhere else for information.
Harmony
“Visual echo is achieved through clear correlations between
color, styles, content and typographic elements of a design.”
Design Basics Index by Jim Krause pg. 54
This site, ascreativedesign.com, is a great example of harmony and more specifically of visual echo. The colors in the logo and repeated throughout the site. The font is stylized and professional. While they spelled color wrong, (colour is the British version ;) the title Adding Color to the Web is laid out in an interesting way with a clear sense of the relationship between the spaces and lines of that font. The content is also laid out in a symmetrical repeating way that adds to the overall harmony.

My Goals for Fall Quarter 2012
I would like to use this quarter to develop a greater understanding of video and interactive design. I am taking a class on interactive video and another class on mobile app design. These will both be great classes to help further my advertising career. Here is a link to a really cool website I found out about in my Interactive Video class...
